About Us

The North American Branch of the Ibadan College of Medicine Alumni Association was incorporated in the USA in 2001 as a non-profit tax-exempt organization with 501(c)(3) Status.

Members includes graduates in Biochemistry, Dentistry, Human Nutrition, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physiology and Physiotherapy; as well as postgraduate degree holders in the medical sciences.

Dr. Toks Owo was the founding President and there were forty-three foundation members who embarked on the mission of engaging fellow alumni and “Giving Back to a Center of Excellence”. Since that time, our numbers have grown and there are currently over 1500 alumni in North America.

The Medical school (Faculty of Medicine) was founded in 1948 with 14 students, as the University College at Ibadan, an external college of the University of London. In 1962, two years after Nigeria’s independence, the University College became the University of Ibadan with independence from the University of London.

As the oldest and most prestigious medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, the University Of Ibadan College Of Medicine has been a center of excellence in learning for seven decades; it has played a pivotal role in furthering clinical medical research in Africa and celebrated its 70th anniversary  in 2018. The two year celebration was named “Atunji” marking the renaissance of the College. In addition to branding all major College events, a series of lectures to be delivered by distinguished lecturers (heroes and distinguished alumni) has been planned. Professor Adeboye Osunkoya (Emory University) delivered the first lecture on 7th February 2018, at the Paul Hendrickse Hall.
